Prof Gray is an Honorary Professor of the Institute for Sustainable Industries and Liveable Cities at Victoria University where he was previously the Executive Director. He has had a focus on applied water and membrane research for over 30 years at both Victoria University and CSIRO. His research has focused on treatment of non-conventional water sources including desalination and water reuse processes, and his team have developed processes for concentrating PFAS from water and soils, membrane integrity monitoring, and demonstrated direct potable reuse for Australian Antarctic Division. In 2013 he was recognised as Thought Leader in Lux Research's international review of water research, is a Co-Editor in Chief of IWA’s Water Reuse journal and is on the editorial board of the Water Research, Desalination and Membranes journals. He was also a Non-Executive Director of Water Research Australia from 2011-2017 and 2021-2024.
